Abstract

Since conservation became the main driver for Doñana, managers and scientists have worked together to implement a periodic recording programme of relevant ecological variables. The first steps focused mainly on endangered species and birds. Throughout decades, many other biological features were incorporated to these surveys. In 2002, an integrated long-term ecological monitoring programme was proposed to systematically monitor a larger number of features. The implementation has been achieved, within reason, by creating a specific staff group devoted to monitoring tasks and testing or refining the proposed set of protocols. Results are reported periodically and are accessible through a web portal. Baseline data on long-term trends are also valued for decision-making by conservation managers. Doñana is contributing to international long-term monitoring and research programmes including socio-economic factors as drivers for biodiversity conservation. © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2010.
