Abstract

The article discusses the denning behavior used by ruffed grouse during the winter to escape predators. Topics mentioned include characteristics of ruffed grouse which burrow into snow during winter nights to conserve energy, snow denning as a composite adaptation, and evolution of the bird's daytime denning behavior which enables it to escape predators with minimal energy expended.
