Mucosal healing (MH), defined by the complete endoscopic healing of all inflammatory lesions, has become a relevant measure of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) status and an important treatment goal. Endoscopy is the gold standard to evaluate MH and treatment response. In this chapter we review the significance of MH in the two main types of IBD, ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD), the various endoscopic scoring systems for each, and clinical applications of MH for the care of IBD patients.
