Abstract

There exist many different shapes and sizes of thyroid glands that can make each surgery unique and challenging. It is important to have an appreciation of the embryology of the thyroid gland to understand the many anatomic variants that can be encountered. The thyroid gland is situated near many critical structures, and a thorough understanding of the relationships to these structures is vital when performing thyroidectomy.
