In this paper, we propose an automated model generation system that assists the user's creativity in conceptual design. The system focuses on creating various modified versions of an existing model, namely a mesh model. Since it is difficult to control mesh models parametrically, we developed a parametric control method that controls the object shape indirectly by using a control mesh. A new model is obtained by deforming an object model. Generated models are evolved, taking into account the user's preference, by using genetic algorithms. The main topics of this paper are 1) automated construction of a control mesh, 2) management of geometric constraints, and 3) evolution of generated models. We applied our proposed system to a car model and the generated new models are shown in the example. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.
