Abstract

Didactic teaching for electrical wiring installation and maintenance courses is a tricky task as it involves careful work steps as well as adherence to specific safety measures. The existence of errors during the execution of the techniques and procedures will be hazardous and wasting materials. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the role of pedagogy and the usage of video as a teaching aid along with didactic teaching strategy, implemented while teaching electrical wiring installation and maintenance courses in vocational colleges, in Malaysia. This study was done qualitatively by using case study approach by interviewing two experienced teachers from vocational colleges and an officer from State Education Department, Johor, Malaysia. The deductive thematical analysis was used to analyse the pedagogical elements and the use of videos in the practical teaching of electrical wiring installation and maintenance courses. Findings show that there are four main domains of the pedagogical roles of a video clip namely cognitive, experience, affective and skill. Six video attributes were also explored, which are the video content, slow motion, realistic, extreme close up, chronology and interactive footages. As a result, the pedagogical roles and the attributes of a video clips can serve as a guideline to the educators and practitioners for the development of video-assisted materials for teaching skills in the electrical wiring installation and maintenance courses.
