Abstract

Discontinuous colon resection (also termed a Hartmann resection) is the operation of choice for a colon resection performed under unfavorable circumstances. Most relate to emergency conditions where tissues or the patient’s overall status is suboptimal. This chapter describes the detailed steps for a rectosigmoid resection with rectal stump and end colostomy. Indications, pitfalls and danger points, preoperative preparation, postoperative care, complications, operative strategy, and technique are all detailed.
