In this chapter we describe the phenomenon of coupled-bunch instabilities and their effect on accelerator operation and performance. Instability dynamics and driving terms are discussed as well as methods for modeling and characterizing the unstable motion. That material is followed by an introduction to modern methods for controlling coupled-bunch instabilities.
