Abstract

Addresses the scope and effect of violent physical assaults and homicide. Violent physical assault and the murder of a family member or close friend are traumatic events that can produce posttraumatic stress disorder or other mental health problems. Rates of physical assault across nations are noted and the psychological impact of the phenomenon is examined. Neurobiological, cognitive, social, and economic impacts are also discussed.
