In this paper, we first present a simple and effective path capacity predicting method to model the complex interaction between medium access mechanism and routing scheme. Based on the predicting model, an end-to-end cross-layer flow control architecture is proposed. The key issues about flowing control are discussed deeply. As we designed, whenever the path length changes, the applications adaptively modify their sending rate with the pre-computed optimal value. Simulation evaluation has demonstrated that this technique can greatly improve the performance of end-to-end transmission in ad hoc network: the throughput of the long path is improved by up to 40%. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.
