Abstract

This article argues for the need of critical proximity in Applied Linguistics, based on the deconstruction of the persistent occidentalist belief in the separation between research, researcher and power. Such episteme has guided us into the prefiguration of a white, heterosexual, and male researcher who constructs ‘scientific truths’. In the present stage of modernity, such ideals do not make any sense in view of the social changes and perplexities that challenge us every day and dethrone such manners of knowledge construction. We highlight the importance of questioning linguistic and epistemological ideologies associated with any sense of effectiveness or theoretical transparency. By way of conclusion, we present the epistemological relevance of imagining the impossible as a central exercise of such critical proximity due to its transgressive gains.
