This article traces the influence of eighteenth century revival of plato's doctrine of ideas through kant, to the founder of modern historiography, leopold versus ranke. Ranke's interpretation is seen primarily in the light of the kantian model of platonism which he accepted through his classical education and retained throughout his long life. An analysis of the development of great ideas in ancient history, especially of religious and political ones as they appear among the hebrews (monotheism), and in the greeks and romans. These form the basis for the rise and success of christian civilization. The world historical forces which appeared in ancient times produced the creative impetus for the rise of a new civilization of mankind. Based on unpublished material in ranke's papers and his "world history".
