This chapter is Ronan FitzGibbon’s account of why and how he founded BrokenCrow Theatre Company in 2011. He explains the company’s unusual structure and how it evolved as a direct reaction to some of the challenges faced by theatre makers. The chapter also explores the logistical issues and creative possibilities involved when breaking away from traditional company structures. He discusses the importance of creating room for the unexpected, for play, and the reasons why he calls the creation and running of BrokenCrow an experiment.
