Abstract

A review of certain aspects of soil magnesiumis presented. It is introduced by a short historical outline of research findings on magnesium deficiencies in soils and plants followed by a brief summary of previous review articles.Exchangeable and non-exchangeable forms of soil magnesium and methods for their determination are then described, and an account is given ofmagnesium additions to, and losses from, the soil. Soil factors affecting plant uptake of magnesium are outlined, and the grass tetany problem is briefly discussed. Finally, the various materials used directly or indirectly as magnesium sources for soil or foliar application are listed, and their characteristics briefly described. © 1974 Francis Group, LLC.
