Cleavage of the heterocyclic rings of the bases of nucleic acids (and their derivatives) can occur through the action of a number of reagents. Sometimes this opening of the ring is an intermediate stage of the reaction and is followed by its closure by groups of atoms which differ from those in the original ring, or in other words, rearrangement takes place.
