OPC in four-wave mixing (FWM) has been realized for various third-order optical nonlinearities. Irrespective of the type of third-order nonlinearity of a medium, a phenomenological study of the generation of a phase-conjugated wave in FWM is carried out in much the same way. In this chapter we will present a phenomenological study of this method which enables us to reveal its major features. The features of particular mechanisms of nonlinearity will be discussed in Chap. 7.
