Abstract

In the United States, the Emergency Department (ED) represents a major portion of health care. The Institute of Medicine issued its report on Emergency Care entitled, "Hospital-based Emergency Care: At the Breaking Point" specifically calling for hospitals to adopt information systems to improve the safety and quality of emergency care. We describe the functional requirements, vendor development, and barriers encountered during creation of a system by an integrated, inter-professional team. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.
