Abstract

This study’s aim was to identify the health care model used in the prenatal care provided within the Family Health Strategy. This qualitative and exploratory study was conducted in three units of the Family Health Strategy in a city in southern Brazil. Data were collected through individual interviews with 10 pregnant women who were in the third trimester of pregnancy. The results were subjected to thematic analysis. Two thematic categories emerged: The perpetuation of the biomedical model in clinical and prenatal care and pregnant groups as an instrument to overcome the biomedical model. The conclusion is that the biomedical model is the most frequently occurring in prenatal care and health education developed through educational groups is confirmed as a strategy to overcome the biomedical model.
