Abstract

This paper discusses the function and role of literary works in Indonesian society from time to time. The functions and roles of literature are closely related to the conditions of society and government. In contemporary Indonesian society today, the function and role of literature is increasingly important because literature can be a unifying tool of the nation. Through literature every group with different ethnic and cultural backgrounds can learn to understand other community groups to cultivate empathy, sympathy, and respect.
