Bisexuality and Citizenship

Abstract

This chapter explores some of the conceptual tools that citizenship studies provide, and the debates such studies raise, in relation to bisexuality. In so doing it aims to provide insight into the issues facing bisexuals, and also to inform the development of citizenship studies, particularly in relation to sexuality and intimacy. Citizenship rights are important for bisexual people given the ways in which bisexuals are marginalised and stigmatised, as discussed in the earlier chapters of the book. Some of the issues concerning citizenship that are relevant to bisexuals and other non-heterosexual people include sexual expression, relationship form, reproduction, freedom from harassment and abuse, social inclusion, and identity recognition.
