Abstract

The incidence of perforated duodenal ulcer has declined significantly over recent decades, with increasing awareness of Helicobacter pylori infection, and widespread use of refrigeration. However, it is still a relatively common presentation of acute peritonitis, and every general surgeon should be prepared to treat this condition. Fortunately, in most cases, a simply omental patch closure (also termed as Graham patch) will suffice; the technique is described here. This chapter includes information on indications, preoperative preparation, pitfalls, and complications. Detailed discussions of operative strategy and technique are also given.
