Barbiturate protection in cerebral hypoxia

Abstract

The effects of hypoxia on cerebral metabolism and the part experience with non-pharmacological measures to achieve cerebral protection with hyperventilation and hypothermia are reviewed. Recent animal work indicating that barbiturate anesthesia protects the brain against several types of hypoxic insults is summarized.
