Surface modification and hardness behavior of AISI 304 as an artificial hip joint using ammonia and scallop shell powder as a nitriding agent

Abstract

Surface modification was carried out in AISI 304 using ammonia and scallop shell powder as the nitriding agent. Furthermore, the temperature variations used were 500°, 550° and 600°C within the durations of 3, 5, and 7 hours. The results showed that the highest point of specimen hardness reached 600°C at 7 hours (1246 VHN) with a nitrogen content of 15.35% and a nitride layer depth of 141.64 μm. In addition, this value was higher than other implant materials, namely AISI 316L (316 VHN), Ti6Al4V (435 VHN), CrCoMo (351 VHN) and human bone (129 VHN).
