Describing under scientific methodology the “state of preservation” of an altarpiece in polychrome wood, putting it in relation to the risks to which it is subjected, requires prior a justified classification of those units that we call “causes” or “deterioration agents” in a concrete and organized way. This involves identifying, ordering and describing the origin of the damage manifested on the work, which have been generated in a continuous process in the time in which a high number of variables, related to each other in an articulated and complex way, take sides. Based on the previous work, we present a critical review of the subject, proposing a new classification of the deterioration agents that have an impact on this type of works
