This chapter defines what a cult is, what leads young people to join them, and what can be done to keep that from happening. For any given adolescent, a combination of risk factors, extraordinary stressors, limited coping mechanisms, and/or insufficient support systems could place him/her at risk for coming under the influence of a cult. The authors look at the interplay between risk factors and protective factors, as well as interventions to counter the effects of cult beliefs on individual adolescents.
