This random collection of thoughts should not be perceived as a jeremiad. Film/media studies is, in many important ways, only getting started. As filmmak-ing itself turns more and more to the digital, we become archivists of past knowl-edge, scholars of the present, prophets of the future. As our outlook broadens and we begin to understand the larger intertextualities of film and all other visual and narrative arts, we can see that film is part of the overwhelming text of cultural practice. It is our business to understand and present it in welcoming ways to the world. The text is returning, this time larger, more inclusive, more demanding-and more complex.
