Abstract

There is an increasing interest in the utilization of renewable resources for the production of biodegradable packaging. Among the biopolymers, starches from several sources have been considered as one of the most promising material for this purpose, and the reasons for this are that starches are biodegradable, inexpensive and available in the worldwide. However, materials produced exclusively from this biopolymer tend to exhibit certain performance limitations, such as poor mechanical behavior and susceptibility to moisture when they are stored in high relative humidity. This could be overcome by using natural fibers as reinforcement material into starch polymeric matrices. This work presents a bibliography review about starch biodegradable packaging reinforced with lignocelulosic fibers from agroindustrial wastes.
