Abstract

The background to the development of current ideas of pelvic floor function is reviewed. The importance of understanding motor control mechanisms of pelvic floor responsiveness in health and disease is an underlying theme of the response to all forms of treatment in pelvic floor disorders. This is an adaptive response based on the capacity of the system to respond when there is significant functional damage. © 2010 Springer-Verlag Milan.
