Abstract

The purpose of this article is to develop an investigation of the main conventions in comics: to approach the linguistic and iconic subject from a semiotics perspective. The act of reading a graphic novel is simultaneously an act of aesthetic perception and an intellectual pursuit; in it the artistic world (perspective, symmetry, lines) and the literary world (grammar, plot, and syntax) intertwine. It is the existence of this grammar and this series of established conventions which allows comics to express our world, through the use of iconic and linguistic codes. We conclude that through the combinations of this series of iconic and linguistic resources, comics take the reader to an alternate world using a series of symbols that allow for several different readings, in the subtext of which exist a cosmivision that orients said reader through the labyrinth of his experiences, and makes the fictional characters therein the archetype protagonists of what can or should be. © 2013 UNED.
