As a result of the evolution of digital technologies and information networks, swarm intelligence has come to be implemented in a range of research perspectives. Building on the assumptions that charac-terize the approach, this paper aims to unpack the importance of swarm-based urban design, which is opening up a new frontier as part of an emerging approach and which lends itself to deployment in myriad situations. This article focuses on a case study of the Kok-kugia studio's Melbourne Docklands project. Although this scheme has not been built, it has paved the way for new explorations and ways of understanding urban design.
