The world wide distribution of multiple sclerosis (MS) so far has not shown for certain any peculiarities except its differing prevalence according to geographic latitude, and probably the formation of foci inside the zones of highest incidence. It can also be shown that the prevalence of MS has changed in the course of time when a population changes its living conditions. The majority of epidemiological pointers to the cause indicate an exogenous pathogenic agent, but genetic factors cannot be excluded as a contributory element in the aetiology.
