Abstract

In cognitive radio networks, the sensing capability of a secondary user is crucial to guarantee the privileged use of a primary user. One of major parameters, the sensing duration (i.e., "Quiet Period") in a frame by a secondary user, during which the secondary user does not access the spectrum, can affect performance of both. In this paper, we examine a sensing scheme involved in a compromise between a secondary user and a primary user. Also, we provide problem formulation from each user perspective with following objectives: throughput maximization from the secondary user's perspective, and interfering duration minimization from the primary user's perspective. Three parameters for the optimization, sensing duration, sensing interval (i.e., time between adjacent sensing durations), and the arrival rate of the primary user, are considered in the analysis. Simulation results validate our analysis. © 2008 IEEE.
