Abstract

The paper address the cost estimation of composite part and assembly aerospace structures. It is shown that SEER-DFM can be effectively used as a tool to estimate the cost of composites but that the user requires some skill in calibrating the software to the cost environment within any particular company. In collaboration with Bombardier Aerosapce Belfast, a range of composite parts and assemblies were used to verify the tool's estimation capabilities while the true value of the tool was then validated through a particular study on a set of composite airstairs. An opportunity for 20% reduction was identified on the basis of the cost breakdown generated by the study. Finally, a parametric study of the assembly costs showed that it is possible to have a relatively accurate estimate of the cost based on weighht alone which would facilitate very early cost estimation prior to the more detailed information being available to run the SEER model. In conclusion, such cost estimating tools can be used to great effect within a concurrent engineering context to control cost and inform design of the manufacturing cost implications of their decisions. Subsequently, the estimation capability can also be used to compress the time required for price/cost reductions to be identified and secured through supply chain cost rationalisation, whether up-front at the make/buy decision stage or even later during production. © 2008 Springer-Verlag London Limited.
