Induction is the transition from an awake state to an anesthetized state. In this process not only the anesthesiologist but also obviously the child and the parents are involved. Anesthesia induction in children may be associated with significant stress for all those involved. When we speak about anesthesia induction, we should not think only of the classic definition of induction. In the past, the role of anesthesiologists was limited to the operating room, and they had little or no contact with the patient nor the family. Today anesthesiologists are involved in ``total patient care'' during the perioperative period which includes the pre-, intra-, and postoperative periods.
