This study examines the changes in the religious-cultural values of bull race in its historical process. The bull race culture that initially has been perceived as a traditional theology, later it experienced a change of mea- ning toward a market theology. In this case, the change that occurs is in aspect of significant syimbols covertly toward significant symbols overtly. The change is related to a mental attitude of Madurese people who per- ceive the bull race initially as a symbol of traditional-religious values, such as courtesy, respect, simplicity, and directed recreation turns into a symbol of the permissive and hedonic economy and prestige (market-ori- ented), as well as being an event to achieve the image and recognition of the higher social and economic statuses. This change has also implications for the motivation of Madurese in owning and maintaining a race bull which increasingly is economical and prestige.
