Abstract

Around 67% population of Pakistan is in rural areas, where almost all houses and buildings are constructed without safety codes and regulations. There are legislative codes and safety regulations regarding construction of buildings, but these codes and regulations are not implemented or negligibly implemented. All related parties are involved in the safety management, but the contractor plays most important role in construction safety. Incentive factors, personnel factors, policy factors, and construction site are affected by the process safety factors and dealing with these factors is very important. Safety performance is determined by organizational environment, safety management and safety conditions of the construction site. Safety culture refers to the human behavior, perceptions, attitudes and practices regarding safety at the construction workplace. The construction safety is also linked to safety planning, designing and decision making. We mentioned some principles and guidelines for building design, construction management and safety management. Safety management system is developed to ensure the site safety and to control risks. Some requirements regarding the building structural elements and construction materials ensure the safety, durability and stability of the building structures. The safety of the site is ensured by better safety performance, effective safety management and quality assurance system. © 2014 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
