Abstract

The Kock pouch/continent ileostomy has inherent weaknesses - nipple valve slipping and nipple prolapse. These can lead to failure, which means a loss of continence. The patients will experience increasingly episodes with discharge of bowel contents and they will have to wear collecting devices. Nipple revisions are often successful in these cases. There are also other factors that can cause failure even though they are not directly related to the mechanical features of the pouch. The end of failures is a conventional smal bowel stoma.
