Abstract

Mathematical modelling has been extended to incorporate full morphological simulations with dambreak and embankment breaching, water quality simulations and real-time forecasting including on-line operation. An application of this modelling package is presented for the Kelani River Catchment in Sri Lanka. The Kelani flows to the north of the capital of Colombo and causes regular flooding in the urban as well as the upstream rural areas. The flood protection alternatives investigated included non-traditional options for controlled flooding of agricultural land. The model was also used to assess the morphological impact of the schemes and the potential for real-time flood forecasting. -from Authors
