This paper involves an attempt to provide a framework for developing a critical realist analysis. The aim is to provide a left social democratic criminology that involves the pursuit of evidence based policy. Realising this objective necessarily requires the linking of theory and practice as well as incorporating considerations of social class and human rights. The theoretical base involves moving beyond the hard version of social constructionism and developing an approach that links agency and structure in an attempt to develop causal.
