Abstract

This Chapter describes a reference scenario that has been extracted from current practices regarding the use of Electronic Patient Records (EPR) in Germany, and in particular the ClinicCoach application developed by the company HIG Coachit. The application is an EPR (or otherwise described as an Electronic Health Record - EHR) and was first implemented in the Accident Surgery Department of the Kassel Clinic on August 24th, 2001. Before the test run was initiated, the developers spent nine months observing the everyday tasks of the hospital staff in the ward. The development process was usercentred and continues iteratively. Nurses, doctors and other medical professionals have direct access to the developers and can communicate any issues that may arise from using the EPR. These in turn are analysed and adjustments or changes are made on the system accordingly. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.
