Abstract

Solid state method has been used as an efficient method to synthesize blue pigment CoAl 2 O 4 at a temperature of 800°C. The products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transformer infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV-Visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and luminescent spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction pattern confirmed the formation of single phase CoAl 2 O 4 . Optical properties of CoAl 2 O 4 ceramic shows an energy band gap in the range of 3.10eV. The emission spectra of spinel CoAl 2 O 4 in the visible region confirmed the presence of tetrahedral coordinated Co 2+ ions.
