Abstract

The increase in the population and energy demand leads to diversified power generation requirement in Turkey. This can be achieved using renewable and sustainable energy resources in an environmentally and smart manner. In this process, the production of electricity from solar energy, namely, photovoltaic (PV) technology, has a significant potential to contribute distributed power generation in the cities. The life cycle of the PV modules, which is associated with the quality of photovoltaic modules, greatly affects the return of investment and total power production. Determination of quality and reliable photovoltaic modules is achieved by testing, product certification, and inspection services. Thus, the production, installation, and operation stages of the PV modules need to be assured using international quality standards via internationally accredited institutions. Accredited certification of PV modules requires specific schemes for production, testing, and inspection of photovoltaic modules. In this study, the importance of testing, certification, and inspection processes for PV modules is emphasized by critical case studies. The case studies include the required certification schemes containing the conditions to be met by the manufacturer such as tests during production line, installation, and operation requirements. The local institutions conducting the aforementioned processes contribute to research and development of PV modules and provide economic benefits for the country by enabling financial incentives for domestic components used in renewable energy-based power plants.
