Abstract

Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf is an herbaceous species native to tropical Asia that has been introduced to several South American countries, including Brazil, where it is known by several local names. This species is recognized in the pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic industries for the chemical properties of its essential oil, which is composed of citral, as main component. The essential oil of this plant is in high demand in countries such as the United States, Japan, France and Switzerland and must be used with caution because large doses can damage the body.
