There is a growing interest in cross-cultural comparisons both among academics and among policy makers, which is related to general trends such as increasing globalization, the advantage of scientific collaboration in terms of building knowledge, and the need for policy makers to be informed about different kinds of solutions to comparable problems. The need for cross-national knowledge on crime is reflected in the United Nations Crime prevention and criminal justice programmes.
