Abstract

The authors have performed the first Rayleigh-Brillouin gain spectroscopy in gases. This was carried out with two mildly focused, counter-propagating laser beams crossed at a small angle of 1degrees in a Brewster-windowed gas cell. As the pump beam is scanned across the probe beam in frequency, a high resolution stimulated Rayleigh-Brillouin (gain/loss) spectrum of the gas in the cell is obtained. Analysis of this experimental spectrum provides a method for determining thermal dynamic parameters and for testing the collision models of the medium. As an example, Rayleigh-Brillouin gain spectra of Ar at 296K were taken (6 References).
