This study views Afghan women at the close of twelve years of war as their country starts to rebuild. If they are to share in their country's redevelopment, their voices must be heard. Over one-quarter of Afghan refugees are women and children; despite hardships, the women have been respected. In pre-war Afghanistan, women gradually began to participate in national development. Now, religious conservatives try to legitimize their leadership by associating profeminist views with social chaos. -Author
