An epiphrenic diverticulum is a herniation of a pouch of esophageal mucosa through the musculature of the distal thoracic esophagus within 10cm of the oesophago-gastric junction. The pathological process is thought to be due to the application of pulsion forces to the mucosa above a functionally obstructing region of abnormal esophageal motility. © 2007 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
