Abstract

The World Health Organization designated 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife in celebration of the 200th birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. This article considers the future of nurse practitioner education in light of nursing history. First, a brief overview describes the progression of nursing education since the founding of the Nightingale School in 1860. Then, current challenges in NP education are discussed. Potential solutions to these issues are presented.
