Abstract

This article deals with ways of enhancing the functionality of tagging systems, by introducing wordnet based ontologies. Tagging systems are a very popular way of describing resource contents, by using words or expressions (this is especially true for the Internet). Introducing wordnet based ontologies enables broadening or narrowing down the search, by referring to other concepts from the same semantic field. This approach significantly improves searching resources gathered in any computer system. The article presents a model, in which the wordnet-like ontology structure is broadened by specific domain relations. This model also assumes that the ontology will be transformed into the so-called normalized form with all the necessary relations for the needs of the enhanced tagging system. This method was implemented in the Wilanów Palace Museum vortal, where the available system of a couple of thousand tags, from the field of Polish history and culture, was used to build an enhanced tagging system. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.
