Abstract

The essay explores the field of linguistics, and in particular investigates the link between Locke's theory of meaning and the sceptical implications that were found in it. The semantic problem of scepticism was later renewed in the sphere of the theory of tropes, of which Du Marsais was the undisputed 18th-century protagonist.
